Zithromax
Zithromax contains azithromycin, which belongs to the group of macrolides. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria such as gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Zithromax prevents bacteria from producing certain essential proteins. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow or multiply.

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a very common STI. It does not cause any symptoms in most people but its effects can be devastating. When left untreated, chlamydia causes infertility in women.
Gonorrhoea
Women are usually unaware they have gonorrhoea but might experience pain or discomfort around the vagina or with urinating. Men may have white, yellow or green discharge from the penis when infected with gonorrhoea. Gonorrhoea is an STI which can be successfully treated but can have serious consequences when left untreated, such as infertility.
How does Zithromax work?
Zithromax fights bacterial infection by inhibiting the production of enzymes that are important to reproduce the pathogen. The bacteria cannot multiply and the infection will cease.
Taking Zithromax
There are different regimens and different doses of Zithromax. Which scheme and dosage are appropriate for the control of the infection a patient suffers, must be determined by a physician. If you have an uncomplicated genital infection, a doctor will usually prescribe a single dose of 1 g Zithromax . This dose should be taken all at once.
Contraindications to Zithromax
You should not take Zithromax if you:
- are allergic to one of the components of Zithromax
- suffer from severe liver disease or renal dysfunction
- suffer from psychiatric problems
- have irregular heartbeat or other heart diseases
- have an electrolyte imbalance
- are infected with a resistant pathogen
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the use of Zithromax is not recommended.
The side effects of Zithromax:
As with all antibiotics, Zithromax could cuase a number of side effects. Many of them are mild. But it can also lead to very serious side effects. It is important that if you experience severe side effects, you contact a physician. Examples of side effects of Zithromax include:
- abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea ,dyspepsia and vomiting
- headaches and disturbances in vision, hearing, smell and taste, dizziness, insomnia
- nervousness
- changes in the blood count
- yeast infections
