Imiquimod
Imiquimod is the active ingredient of a cream called Aldara. Aldara is used for the treatment of genital warts. These warts might be caused by either the HPV or herpes virus and are highly contagious.
How does Imiquimod work?
Imiquimod helps the body to fight the warts. What it does it activates the body’s own immune system which then fights the infection. Other treatments available, like Warticon, focus on killing the wart itself whereas imiquimod has a more natural approach by using the body’s immune cells.
Can I use Imiquimod against my genital warts?
Many people have achieved good results with imiquimod. However, the use of imiquimod is not entirely without risk, its effects may go too far and the immune system may damage its own healthy skin cells. Therefore you should not use imiquimod for a period longer than 16 weeks. If you suffer from problems with your immune system, imiquimod may also be unsuitable for you.
