How do painkillers work?

When you have an injury or something in your body goes wrong, local nerve endings send pain messages back to the brain. Painkillers interfere with these messages by blocking the brain’s pain signal, so they work in the brain rather than on the spot where you feel the pain. They come in different forms: tablets liquids or suppositories (which have to be inserted into the rectum). Some painkillers are also available as a creams.

NSAIDs

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used to treat all kinds of health complaints such as pain and fever. Specifically they are used to reduce inflammation. Drugs like Ibuprofen (in doses >600mg) and Diclofenac are used by people suffering from various pains, from migraines to arthritis, and they help them lead their daily lives.

Opioids

Opioids are the strongest class of pain medication. Opioids block the pain signals sent through the nervous system. A side effect of opioids is that they suppress coughing. Opioids can slow down your breathing, it is therefore important that they are not used by people with breathing problems.
