Diclofenac is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammation Drug (NSAID). It is used to treat inflammation and pain. When you suffer from pain caused by the (chronic) inflammation of a joint or severe acute pains such as period pain or migraine, a regular painkiller such as paracetamol may not suffice. Diclofenac is an effective painkiller which can help reduce both the inflammation and the pain. You may also know Diclofenac as the active ingredient of drugs such as Voltarol.

Tablets: swallow whole with a drink of water with or after food.

Diclofenac for the treatment of pain and inflammations

Inflammatory illnesses such as arthritis and gout may cause pain and discomfort. Diclofenac can be used to treat such pains as well as acute pains such as kidney stones or tooth aches. It reduces the inflammation while at the same time reducing the pain it causes by blocking the pain signal sent to the brain. Some people may also use Diclofenac for the treatment of migraines

How do I use Diclofenac?

You can take Diclofenac with a glass of water, make sure you do not chew on the tablet. Normally, you will notice the effects of Diclofenac after one hour and they will last approximately 6 hours. The drug will work more quickly when you take it on an empty stomach.

Does Diclofenac have any contraindications?

People who suffer from one of the following conditions should not use Diclofenac.

History of allergy to diclofenac or allergic reactions following the use of aspirin;
Pregnancy after the sixth month;
Active stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding. Inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis;
Heart disease or a history of heart failure;
Liver or renal diseases;
Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, these drugs should not be taken for dengue fever, as they often cause severe capillary leakage and subsequent heart failure.

Does Diclofenac have any side effects?

Diclofenac may cause the following side effects:

Stomach and bowel complaints, such as nausea and diarrhoea. These effects may decrease when you take Diclofenac with food.
Headaches, dizziness or skin rashes may occur in rare cases.

If you experience any other side effects please contact your physician as you might be allergic to Diclofenac or may experience a very rare side effect.
