Birth control pills

There are different types of birth control pills available. Depending on your wishes and needs, one pill could be more suitable for you than another. Some birth control pills are combined, which means they contain oestrogen and progesterone to replicate a woman’s natural hormones. These hormones prevent ovulation and at the same time adjusting the lining of the womb so that should an egg be released, it will not be able to set in the womb. There are also progesterone only birth control pills, like Cerazette, available for women who are breastfeeding or have an increased risk of thrombosis or heart disease. When you use a birth control pill correctly, you have a 99% protection from pregnancy.

Birth control pills side effects

When you have just started the pill, you may experience side effects such as nausea and headaches, but these should subside after the first few months. Breakthrough bleedings are the most commonly reported side effect of the birth control pill. Using the pill increases the risk of thrombosis and high blood pressure.

It is also important to realise that a birth control pill will not protect you from STIs.

Birth control patch

Some women do not like to take pills or are afraid to forget them. For these women a birth contol patch may provide a solution. The patch is used for one week at a time, for three weeks in a row and works in the same way with the same hormones as a combined contraceptive pill. Another reason some women prefer the birth control patch is that its effectiveness is not influenced by vomitting or diarrhoea. And you leave the patch on in bed, at the gym or even in the pool.

As the patch contains the same ingredients as the combined birth control pill, the same side effects may be expected.

Other forms of birth control

Alternatives for the pill include the NuvaRing, a vaginal ring which you can leave in for 21 days.
